SoilSync
This system transforms soil laboratory reports into tailored nutrient plans for each field. Advisors import analyses, select the target crop, compare the cost and outcomes of organic versus mineral inputs, and maintain a historical archive of plans linked to harvest results.
The problem
Advisors at agricultural co-operatives and advisory services face a daily challenge: soil laboratory reports arrive in diverse PDF layouts, making it difficult to extract and standardise analysis results for nutrient planning. Creating nutrient plans manually in spreadsheets is time-consuming and error-prone, leaving no audit trail of how recommendations were derived. Fertiliser costs are rising sharply, prompting growers to re-evaluate strategies, while tightening nutrient-use regulations across Europe drive demand for precise, compliant planning tools. This workflow currently consumes significant advisory time without visibility into whether the recommended plan actually matches what growers apply.
The product
SoilSync transforms laboratory reports into tailored nutrient plans for each field. An advisor imports a soil analysis, selects the target crop, and the system compares organic and mineral fertiliser options side by side, using the client's own price lists to show real spending implications. The underlying nutrient plan engine generates recommendations by comparing crop requirements against measured soil status, with full versioning to track changes over time. The system maintains a complete historical archive linking each plan to the inputs actually applied and the yields achieved, allowing advisors to review performance season to season and refine recommendations. Field and sample records, laboratory reports, versioned plans, and application records form an interconnected data model accessed via web and mobile applications.
What it does
Field & sample model
The system maintains records of fields or parcels, the dates of soil sampling, and the laboratory reports that analyse each sample.
Lab report import
Import workflows handle comma-separated and XML files from recognised laboratories, and advisors can also enter data manually via a form when structured files are not available.
Nutrient plan engine
The rules engine compares crop requirements against measured soil status to generate a nutrient plan, which advisors can edit and customise; the underlying rule set is versioned to track changes over time.
Cost comparison
A cost comparison module evaluates organic and mineral fertiliser options side by side, using the client's own price lists to show real spending implications.
PDF OCR import
An optical character recognition module with a review interface processes scanned or image-based reports; accuracy is tracked separately for each laboratory to identify which sources are reliable.
Dealer catalogue links
Finalised nutrient plans can be converted into purchase baskets in connected dealer or e-commerce catalogues, simplifying order placement.
Problems it solves
- Soil laboratory reports arrive in diverse PDF layouts, making it difficult for advisors to extract and standardise the key analysis results.
- Creating nutrient plans manually in spreadsheets is time-consuming and error-prone, leaving no audit trail of how recommendations were derived.
- Advisors lack a clear view of the cost differences between organic and mineral fertiliser options that would meet the same nutrient requirements.
- Most advisory workflows do not systematically link the nutrient plan to the inputs actually applied and the yields achieved, making it impossible to measure the plan's effectiveness.
Standards it follows
- The EU Data Act may affect how farm data can be shared or exported; the design should anticipate data portability requirements.
