PackSmart
PackSmart is a system for packaging decisions and compliance tailored to produce packers and exporters. It provides a materials and supplier catalogue, cost comparison tools, and a checklist tracker designed to keep teams compliant with new EU packaging regulations.
The problem
Fresh-produce packers and food exporters face mounting uncertainty as new packaging regulations come into force. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) applies from 12 Aug 2026, with staged obligations running through 2040. Packaging managers and quality teams must now identify which obligations apply to each SKU, gather evidence, track compliance deadlines, and respond to customer demands for sustainability transparency. Today, this work happens in spreadsheets and email conversations, with supplier specifications scattered across PDFs and drives. The regulatory clock is running, and teams lack a structured way to organise evidence or compare their options.
The product
PackSmart is a compliance and cost-comparison platform designed for this specific role and challenge. The system brings together your packaging materials and supplier specifications in one searchable catalogue, where each SKU links to its PPWR compliance checklist and evidence tracking. A cost comparison module lets you evaluate packaging options by material, freight, and labour to find the lowest-cost solutions that meet your requirements. The compliance tracker ties each obligation to its deadline and required evidence, so your team can demonstrate readiness to regulators and customers. Customer-specific requirements can be captured and tracked separately for each buyer, keeping your team aligned with what retailers demand.
What it does
Packaging & supplier catalogue
A searchable catalogue that collects your packaging materials, formats, and specifications with recyclability data and all supplier documentation linked and accessible.
Compliance tracker (PPWR)
Each SKU gets its own compliance checklist of PPWR obligations and evidence requirements, with deadline tracking tied to the regulation.
Cost & option comparison
Compare packaging costs per unit and per pallet, including freight and materials, to identify the lowest-cost options that meet your requirements.
Customer requirement profiles
Capture and track retailer and customer-specific packaging requirements for each SKU so your team stays aligned with what each customer demands.
Supplier catalogue integrations
Import supplier price lists and specifications in bulk to keep your catalogue current and avoid manual data entry across multiple sources.
Shelf-life simulation (optional)
For a limited list of products with validated trial data, the system can run modified-atmosphere and respiration models to forecast shelf life.
Problems it solves
- Your team is uncertain which obligations from the new packaging regulation apply to your products and what evidence you need to collect.
- Supplier specifications are locked in PDFs and scattered across email and drives, making it hard to compare materials or costs.
- You lack a structured way to compare packaging options by cost and performance, so decisions often default to habit or supplier relationships.
- Different retailers impose different packaging requirements, and tracking these per customer is laborious when done in spreadsheets.
Standards it follows
- The PPWR, Regulation (EU) 2025/40, entered force on 11 Feb 2025 and applies from 12 Aug 2026, with staged obligations running to 2040 and a requirement for all packaging to be recyclable by 2030.
